STI-WNU cagers win 'Abanse Negrense' Governor’s basketball cup

CAGERS from the STI-West Negros University (WNU)Team were named champion of the “Abanse Negrense” Governor’s Cup 5-on-5 Basketball Tournament held at their Gymnasium in Bacolod City on Saturday, December 10, 2022.

The Dumaguete City Team was 1st runner-up while Bacolod City-ABB came in second place.

A statement from the provincial government said that the tournament, spearheaded by the Provincial Sports Office, is a tribute to the late Oscar “Dodong” Bascon for his contributions to Negros basketball.

Bascon used to be the manager of the Negros Slashers at the Metropolitan Basketball Association.

He paved the way for Bacolod players such as Rudy Distrito, Yves Dignadice, Noli Locsin, Donking Sasuman, Boyet Fernandez, and Reynel Hugnatan among others to be discovered in the big leagues through the Negros Basketball Association he organized.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson led the awarding of the winners together with former Board Member Agustin Ernesto Bascon and Carminia Gatuslao-Bascon, and Provincial Sports Coordinator Anthony Carlo Agustin.
