WBC gives GAB Chair Mitra Heroes for Humanity Award

DESPITE these difficult times where everyone had been trying to survive amid the Covid-19 pandemic, there are many reasons to remain hopeful.

The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) recently received one piece of good news from the prestigious World Boxing Council and WBC Cares Organization--a worldwide organization set up by the WBC to improve the lives of the young and disadvantaged people across the globe.

Jill Diamond, WBC International Secretary and International Chairman of WBC Cares, announced that there were three remarkable Filipino personalities out of the 200 nominees who made the cut.

They are eight-division world boxing champion Senator Manny Pacquiao, professional boxing referee Bruce McTavish, and GAB Chairman Abraham Khalil "Baham" Mitra.

WBC recognized Mitra’s efforts when he sought assistance from Senator Bong Go, chairman of Senate Committee on Sports, in forming a strong alliance with the Department of Social Welfare and Development to provide much-needed financial assistance for our country’s professional boxers, mixed marital arts and Muay Thai fighters, trainers, matchmakers and other ring officials, through the Assistance to Individual in Crisis Situation (AICS) program.

According to GAB, a total of 536 combat sports licensees were given AICS aid in the National Capital Region, Cavite, Batangas, Rizal, Laguna, and some areas in Northern Luzon. Cash assistance for the remaining beneficiaries are being processed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Mitra, on the other hand, thanked the WBC for the recognition. (JSG)
