Baguio mayor backs Cafgu station in Sagada

BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan who stands as Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) chairman is backing calls of the army to set up a Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu) station in Sagada.

Domogan said if the setup of a Cafgu station in the town will help the peace and order situation then it should be studied.

During the last RPOC meeting in Ifugao, General Leopoldo Imbang of the 503rd Infantry Brigade recommended the formation and installation of a Cafgu detachment to deter any attacks by rebel groups.

Despite being a peace zone, there have been 162 attacks since 2010 including the June 5 encounter at the northern part of Sagada where a policeman was killed while nine others were hurt.

A resolution from the RPOC condemning the recent attack in Sagada is also being crafted to secure peacekeeping efforts of government forces in the town.

The army general said rebels freely conduct activities in the area which include the celebration of the CPP anniversary, consolidation meetings, encampments, meetings and dialogs, harboring, foraging, sightings, training, mass work and visitations totaling to 171 monitored activities in the areas of Aguid, Balugan, Banagan, Madungo, Fidelisan, Poblacion and Tanulong.

The Regional Mobile Force Battalion 15, and Mountain Province Provincial Mobile Force Company were conducting peacekeeping operations when they encountered an undetermined number of armed rebels at Mt. Sipitan, Barangay Aguid.

Domogan said the members of the Cafgu unit must be screened and selected to become effective deterrents of crime and rebellion.
