AT LEAST P14.6 million was earmarked for the rehabilitation of the Balili Bridge and has ordered a load limit last week after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported its wear and tear.
According to Benguet First Engineering District (Benguet 1) of the DPWH, the public was advised to take alternate routes going to and from Halsema Highway.
“The Balili Bridge along Baguio-Bontoc Road has shown signs of weakening, transverse cracks and scouring has developed on the concrete deck due to wear and tear,” said Benguet 1 District Engineer Ireneo Gallato in its letter to Mayor Romeo Salda on July 29.
The DPWH official on Monday also asked for vehicular traffic assistance along Balili Bridge in La Trinidad Benguet to maintain smooth flow of traffic.
DPWH added to pre-empt any untoward incident, trucks or vehicles above five tons will not be allowed to pass through the bridge and instead advised to pass thru the Shilan–Beckel Road.
Salda said signage were already posted and installed for motorists informing of a five ton weight limit for vehicles allowed to traverse in the bridge.
He added the bridge, constructed in the 1950s have gone through several calamities such as flooding and earthquake.
“We are once again asking for the patience and cooperation of stakeholders,” he said.
He added their office is waiting for the final report of the DPWH with regards to the plans for the bridge.
The Balili Bridge connects motorists going nearby northern towns including Tublay, Atok, Kibungan, Kapangan and Bakun.
