Council to study Zamora case

COMMUNITY anger has not quelled over San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora's health and safety protocol breaches.

Karlo Altomonte has submitted a petition signed by over 10,000 to declare Zamora as persona non grata in Baguio to the offices of Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan and Councilors Betty Lourdes Tabanda, Isabelo Cosalan Jr. and Francisco Roberto Ortega VI.

Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan said the best way to decide on possible action is to wait for the police to come up with a report.

Olowan added the city has a sisterhood agreement with San Juan that aims to help both areas to promote and aid each other in terms of promotion and tourism.

The vice mayor also said the city mayor has accepted the apology of Zamora that was issued publicly.

The City Council on Monday, June 8, backed the move of Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda in calling for the submission of detailed report from the Baguio City Police Office to be able to determine what protocols have been breached both by the Zamora and his convoy composed of 18 persons and six vehicles, as well as city stakeholders like the Baguio Country Club, City Health Services Office and local police, if any at all.

Tabanda said it is important to have a correct account of what transpired to be able to aid legislators on the correct action.

The lawmaker said the complete police report when submitted will have to be studied by the City Council and possible action to be submitted to the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the agency which has jurisdiction over Zamora's case.

Councilor Arthur Allad-iw also backs the investigation.

Allad-iw noted San Juan has a high incidence of Covid-19 cases, which may have compromised health of citizens and frontliners.

In the petition, Altomonte detailed why the rage of the people cannot be quelled.

The letter to city leaders also states that citizens have been arrested for various, some even lesser, quarantine rules violations.

The petition has reached over 10,000 signatures as of Monday night, June 8, and the number is growing.
