Councilor downs plea for bikes at Session Road

BAGUIO City Councilor Benny Bomogao has thumbed down calls to allow bicycles at Session Road.

Bomogao said he is not in favor with calls by advocates to amend traffic laws which ban motorcycles and bicycles at the city’s main road.

“I am not in favor with this, this will entail a public consultation for amendment and I think (the law) prevents accidents,” Bomogao said.

The law banning bikes at Session Road was crafted in the 1940s but was only recently implemented.

Daily Cycle Movement (DCM) recently revived the call to open Session Road for bikes with Jim Ward, co-founder of group said bikes are now used for mobility.

DCM is also pushing for the one meter distance of vehicles from bikes for safety as well as the set up bike lanes in key areas in the city.

Session Road is the only road in the city where bikes are banned but according to Ward, the road plays an important part in accessibility as well as perception of motorists and people to the cycling community.

Bomogao said he believes bikers can enter Session Road without their two-wheel rides and stressed accidents are more prone when bikes and motorcycles ply the main thoroughfares.

However, Ward stressed the need to separate the motorcyclists from the bikers when crafting and deciding on laws as both groups are different.
