Domogan backs Melvin Jones relocation for night market

BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan is waiting for revised plans for night market vendors at the peripherals of the Melvin Jones.

Domogan said plans made by City Engineering Office led by Acting City Engineer Victorio Olpindo are on its second revision, stressing relocation is set only at the side Melvin Jones.

The chief executive also appealed to vendors at the Harrison Road night market to abide by rules set by the city on sanitation and cleanliness.

Domogan said the night market brings livelihood as well as a site for displaced vendors of the market area to sell their wares but stressed, discipline and adherence to rule must be complied with.

At the City Council, Committee on Market Trade Commerce and Agriculture chairman Councilor Leandro Yangot is leading dialogs with vendors.

“Ipaglalaban natin ang pagpalago sa night market. Remember I issued the first Administrative Order establishing the night market in 2006 when I was the acting mayor. It was further enhanced by then Mayor Peter Rey Bautista and further improved to where it is now by Mayor Mauricio Domogan, Initially, we started with about 50 vendors, now we have 1068 vendors,” said Yangot.

The initial meeting last week gathered vendors and discussed violation in the sanitation code as relayed by the city health officer, one of the most glaring misdeeds by vendors which have earned the ire of officials and the community.

Another dialog is set this week to iron out differences and come to a solution.

Yangot is backing plans to relocate vendors adding the night market is the only business enterprise handled by the city with very minimal capital and it's earning, feeding and supporting 1068 families.

“Our strategy is to empower the vendors at the night market. We will encourage them to take an active role in making the night market truly world class. It is one of the few remaining places of interest where domestic and foreign tourists can visit. If I had my way, it's about time we pedestrianize session road. The premium for session road businessmen is to allow them to put umbrellas with tables beside their business establishment. Part of session or Calderon Street can also be a possible relocation site for the night market. In fact during our time since, ginamit ang Calderon Street it's not so busy at night,” Yangot said.
