First aiders needed in gyms

BAGUIO City Councilor Joel Alangsab has proposed an ordinance requiring health and fitness clubs to require their trainers and instructors to undergo training on first aid.

“Trainers and instructor have their responsibility over the safety of their students or clients during training or workout accident,” Alangsab said.

If the local law is passed, all slimming centers, gyms, health clubs or physical fitness establishments in the city will be compelled to require their full-time trainers and instructors to undergo training on first aid as a pre-requisite for hiring or continuous employment.

The course should be conducted by the Philippine National Red Cross or any government agency as a requirement for hiring or continued employment and a certificate of training issued should be displayed at the establishments to inform the public personnel are trained as first aid responders.

Penalties amounting to as high as P5,000 and a revocation of business permit will be meted if found to be in violation of the law.

“It has been noted that very few of the trainers/instructors employed by these establishments have undergone proper training on how to administer first aid or give temporary relief to clients who might suffer an injury, seizure or cardiac arrest during a workout or strenuous physical activity,” added Alangsab.

The City Health Services Office will be mandated to conduct monitoring and inspection of all health clubs, slimming centers and gyms once the ordinance is passed.
