LADY councilor Elaine Sembrano is asking motorists to advocate etiquette at all times.
In a proposed law, Sembrano filed the “No standing parking reservation” measure to prevent confrontation and possible scuffles.
The parking problem in Baguio City has pushed officials to find solutions through building parking spaces in the central business district which has been a topic of debate among locals who want to conserve open spaces as build free zones.
“Motorists nowadays have a hard time looking for available parking spaces, there are instances of confrontation involving motorists and pedestrians regarding parking slot reservations,” Sembrano said.
The law which hurdled its first reading said basic parking etiquette and polite behavior dictates that in the absence of formal reservation, parking spaces are not on a first come first serve basis, this is regardless of whether it’s in a public or private area.
“In the interest of peace and order, public concern and morals, there is a need to prohibit the act of standing to assure parking slots,” added Sembrano.
The Sembrano law prohibits the act of reserving a parking space by physically standing or occupying the area, applicable in all free parking and pay parking spaces in the city.
A fine of P1,000 will be imposed upon any person who violates the law if approved and all spaces where parking is allowed will have to clearly display signs to inform the public of the measure.
