A RISE in the need for construction workers are expected within the next years according to the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA)-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

TESDA-CAR office-in-charge Manuel Wong explained the possible increase in the need for construction workers is due to the build-build-build program of the Duterte administration which requires a volume of skilled workers trained under TESDA.

“Aside from the construction trade, there is also a need for heavy equipment operators, welders, and the automotive trade aside from tourism, information and communications technology for the business process outsourcing and even animation,” Wong said.

Wong also noted a need for heavy equipment operators but there are only few technical-vocational schools are offering such course.

Meanwhile, TESDA-CAR assures technical-vocational graduates coming from the private and TESDA institutions follow a standard of competency.

“We made sure that when they graduate from technical education and vocational training coming from the private vocational education schools and TESDA technological institutions, they have undergone competency assessment. If they applied and are accepted, we are confident that they are competent provided they pass the entry requirements of a private company,” Wong added.

For this year, TESDA-CAR focused on two areas for the employment of technical-vocational schools graduates.

“What we marketed here were two focus areas, one is the possibility for them to be employed with the private companies we invited for local and overseas employment, and second is for the possibility for them to be enrolled with different qualification of courses,” Wong added.

Some 300 applicants took advantage of the job fair offered by TESDA-CAR at the University of Baguio gymnasium together with its partners who also offered openings health care and language schools among others.
