Caraa 2020 hosting open as Baguio begs off

WITH Baguio City not keen on bidding for the upcoming Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association in February next year, the hosting for the annual regional meet is still open.

Gaudencio Gonzales of the Baguio City Sports Division said the Summer Capital has begged off for the hosting of the largest sporting event in the region citing several developments are in the pipeline at the athletic bowl.

Gonzales added the city has already hosted Caraa in 2016 and 2017 after the improvement and installation of rubberized tartan track at the Baguio Athletic Bowl.

Abra hosted Caraa in 2018 and Apayao earlier on March this year after completing the renovation of its sports complex.

The Department of Education – in the region (DepEd CAR) meanwhile announced they are now open to accept bidders to host the biggest annual regional sports competition for 2020, 2021, and 2022.

The early identification of hosts will ensure well prepared sports facilities, billeting schools as well as athletes and coaches according to DepEd officials.

May Eclar, DepEd CAR director said this will allow would-be hosts to have ample time to prepare standard sports facilities as well as enough billeting centers for student-athletes.

“Also, our local government units(LGUs) whether from the barangay level up to the provincial level will be able to gauge their budget allotments relative to sports development and participation to competitions such as the Caraa for the next three years,” she added.

Regional sports coordinator Agustin Gumuwang reiterated the bidders should consider first and foremost their sports facilities that includes a rubberized track oval that is accessible and free to the general public.

The DepEd officials hope the provision of sports facilities by the local government units that are at par with international standards for both competitions and trainings will redound to the discovery and development of outstanding Cordilleran athletes.

“Of course, with the best sports facilities, we can train and be more competitive in our engagements in different sports competitions here or abroad; not only for Caraa or Palarong Pambansa but also in other national and international sports arenas,” said Gumuwang.

Aside from the facilities, the host locality should have available basic services such as medical and dental, communications, water and electric power supply and the peace and order situation in the locality must be excellent and conducive to the holding of the regional activity.

Eclar added the capability and willingness of the LGU to shoulder expenses necessary for the hosting of the CARAA Meet, including construction and renovation of sports facilities, billeting and other infrastructure requirements is also part of the criteria.

“There should also be the manifestation of uncompromising unity of all socio-economic political groups, government, and non-government entities in ensuring the successful staging of the regional sports event,” said Eclar.

Deadline of submission of letters of intent to DepEd CAR from interested bidders is on September 27. Roderick Osis with a report from Georaloy Palao-ay/DepEd CAR information officer
