VINCE Geophra Tormis of Barangay Macasandig is Cagayan de Oro's newest beauty queen after being crowned Miss Cagayan de Oro 2023.

In the Higalaay Festival's most awaited event, Tormis bested the other 12 candidates and ultimately won the crown during the coronation night held at the Limketkai Atrium last Saturday, August 26, 2023.

On the other hand, Katheryn Guipetacio of Barangay Lapasan won first runner-up, followed by Hanna Marie Carpenter of Barangay 17 as the second runner-up, Kathleen Mae Ubanan of Barangay Iponan as the third runner-up, and Angel Junalyn Colima of Barangay Kauswagan as the fourth runner-up.

After months of preparation, training, and exposure, Miss Cagayan de Oro was finally crowned. Last month, the candidates have been through various minor competitions of the pageant, which helped the judges determine the city's next beauty queen.

"I'm just proud and glad that I'm your new Miss Cagayan de Oro," Tormis said.

The new beauty queen added that with the Miss Cagayan de Oro pageant, she has a platform to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection, which is her advocacy.

"My advocacy for Cagayan de Oro is all about environmental protection because this city is very rich in natural and beautiful surrounding and its our job to protect it as Kagay-anons," Tormis said.

"These are the true crown jewels of our city, and with the help of our City Government and the Kagay-anons, this advocacy will be put into action and we will be able to ensure a thriving and vibrant future for our beloved Cagayan de Oro," she added.

Tormis is also an advocate for solo parent empowerment as she was raised by a single mother.

She further shared that she would want to empower single parents by providing them with "a community where they would feel heard, love and appreciated."

Another thing she shared was her preparation for the coronation night, which involved research on anything and everything about Cagayan de Oro.

This proved to be helpful as during the question and answer segment, the question posed to Tormis was: "Among the past winners of Miss Cagayan de Oro, who do you look up to and why?"

Tormis: "That would be our Miss Cagayan de Oro 1994 Mrs. Karen Lluch. She was a breast cancer survivor and with that very dark experience, she made something wonderful. She became a symbol of strength and hope to each and every Kagay-anon. And I would like to be like her someday.

"I wanna be someone who uplifts and gives life to the people who are losing hope. by giving them a helping hand and, of course, reminding them that they are not alone in this battle. Because I am with them. And together as one resilient Kagay-anons, we will be able to face any difficulties together."

Tormis have received most of the pageants corporate awards. She also won three special awards, namely: Best in Swimsuit, Darling of the Press and Best in Evening Gown.

Meanwhile, according to City Councilor Jay Roa Pascual, the chairman of the committee on tourism, Tormis will be promoting Cagayan de Oro City and will be involved in all of the city's programs and activities.

Tormis, for her part, said if given the chance, she would enter a national pageant to represent Cagayan de Oro.

"For so many years, I had ran away from a lot of opportunities like this not because I did not want to, because I did not believed in myself. But I've come to realize that we should be the first one to believe in ourselves and that is something that I want to tell [the youths]," Tormis said.

"They should grab every opporunity and they should do everything for their dreams because all of their dreams are valid, regardless of how big or how small," she added.
