Barangay officials urged to craft public safety plan

THE Cagayan de Oro City Council is pushing to craft a comprehensive public safety plan for the city.

City Councilor Romeo Calizo, chairperson of the committee on fire, police, and public safety said the integrated security plan should come from the 80 barangays of Cagayan de Oro.

"In due time, we will realize that the barangays should manage their own security setup because we cannot let the police do it alone. The cutting edge of security implementation should be done by the barangay themselves," he said.

City Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya said creating the safety plan should be the priority of the city government with the security threats in the city and Misamis Oriental, following the bombing in Maguindanao.

He said the public safety plan should create linkages from barangays to city and police officials everyday even without threats.

"We should be proactive instead of of just being passive and only responsive when the incident already happened," Nacaya said.

Calizo said he and Nacaya will study and sponsor resolutions that should be adopted by the 80 barangay councils of Cagayan de Oro.
