Oro councilors want monument rise for ‘Tatay Nene’

CAGAYAN de Oro City Councilor Zaldy Ocon on Monday, November 4, pushed for the construction of a monument in honor of the late Kagay-anon Senator Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr.

In a special report, Ocon said putting up a monument for the late senator is the Kagay-anons’ way of honoring Pimentel’s legacy and demonstrate the city’s pride for his contributions to the city and country.

“During his term as mayor in our city, he pushed for the transfer of the old cemetery from Hayes Street to Bolonsiri in Barangay Camaman-an. Ug tungod sa iyang initiative, nabulahan ang syudad kay natukod dayon ang hall of justice sa old cemetery and other offices,” Ocon said.

“The next generation and future leaders will now look up to him for inspiration,” he added.

The city council approved a resolution urging the National Historical Commission to conceptualize and study Ocon’s proposal to build a monument not only for Pimentel but former city mayors in the city who already passed away.

The proposal also includes a monument another local political figure Emmanuel “Maning” Neri Pelaez who served as vice president of the Philippines from 1961 to 1965.
