Institutionalization of rainwater harvesting system eyed

THE City Council committees on planning and environment are studying to adopt an ordinance which promotes proper capture, storage and utilization of rainwater from the rooftops of houses and establishments to augment water supply and possibly reduce demand for potable water.

The proposed measure is called Rainwater Harvesting ordinance which aims to reduce run-off and flooding in sealed ground surfaces.

If the measure is approved, it will require the installation of rainwater harvesting system for the construction of new houses, apartments, duplex or multi-storey buildings and residential buildings.

It will also require newly-established agricultural plantations to install the same rainwater system.

The proposed ordinance shall mandate the creation of the Cagayan de Oro Water Resources Management Board to oversee the implementation of the said ordinance.

The Rainwater Harvesting system is also practised in Davao City to promote sustainability through the use of harvest water for industrial and non-drinking purposes.
