Misamis Orinetal braces for non-stop rains

AT LEAST 10 municipalities in Misamis Oriental have suspended classes while some roads in Cagayan de Oro City were flooded due to non-stop rains, on Tuesday morning, June 5.

The municipalities of Binuangan, Opol, Salay, Lagonglong, Sugbongcogon, Jasaan, Balingasag, Initao, Libertad and Lugait have their classes cancelled as the low pressure turned into a tropical depression Domeng that affected the province and the city.

Fernando Dy Jr., chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), said the rains started to pour around 3:00 a.m., forcing the schools to suspend classes.

But, Dy said no preemptive evacuation has been announced and no untoward incidents were reported.

"If majority of the towns declare the suspension of classes then the PDRRMO can recommend to the governor to cancel all classes in the entire province," Dy said.

The six-hour downpour also caused floodwaters to rise at a portion of the National highway in Kauswagan which became impassable to motorists. Part of Villarin Street in Barangay Carmen also experienced flooding.

Dy said they continue monitoring the entire province for possible flashfloods and landslides as the bad weather may last until Thursday.

Dy added all rescue assets and equipment were on standby to augment town disaster offices.
