Night duty cop dies in ‘sleep’

A POLICEMAN assigned to secure the Police Regional Office (PRO)-Northern Mindanao office was found dead before the break of dawn on Tuesday, May 8.

Police Officer 1 (PO1) Jungy Aranza, 33 and a resident of Zayas, brgy. Carmen, this city, was no longer breathing when his colleagues woke him up at the quarter of Kalipay Hall, in Camp Alagar, Lapasan, around 2:40 a.m.

They would supposedly substitute him as duty sentinel but he no longer responded, according to initial investigation.

Still, fellow cops rushed Aranza to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival.

Aranza was a member of Public Safety Basic Recruit Course (PSBRC), class of 2010-03.

He underwent training on PSBRC, Special Counter-insurgency Operations Unit Training (SCOUT) and Small Units Tactics Training (SUTT).

Also, Aranas used to be assigned at the Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB)-Northern Mindanao and detailed at the Office of the Regional Director as building guard.

PRO-Northern Mindanao spokesperson Superintendent Lemuel Gonda said Aranza's family has requested the police to have his body autopsied.

Gonda said Aranza's wife said her husband had earlier complained of chest pain.

The PRO-Northern Mindanao leadership has extended its condolences to the bereaved family while creating the Line of Duty (LOD) board to facilitate the benefits and claims of the surviving family members.

"All the benefits of any PNP personnel who died will be accorded to the surviving family members, the spouse and the children,"Gonda said.

While initial investigation ruled `no foul play’ on the death of Aranza, Gonda said the police will still push for a probe as a matter of procedure to be handled by the investigators of Police Station 3 in Agora.

"The Standard Operating Procedure of the PNP is to conduct investigation and to submit report," Gonda said.
