Number of drug busts increases despite virus threat

POLICE have recorded an increase in the number of drug operations conducted and drug suspects arrested in Cagayan de Oro City amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) crisis.

Data from the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) showed that from March 15 to April 22, anti-illegal drug operatives launched 131 operations and arrested 180 drug personalities.

This is 173 percent higher in number of operations and 227 percent higher in arrested persons compared to the same period last year, which only recorded 48 operations and arrested 55 drug suspects.

Cocpo spokesperson Major Evan Vinas said the increase is based on the information and support of the public in the police's fight against illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, Cocpo has a running total of 2,707 curfew violators.

Vinas said violators were made to watch a film about the effects of Covid-19 and the measures put in place to prevent its spread.

Violators were allowed to go home after 5 a.m.
