A TOTAL of ten homeowners associations in each of the relocation sites in Cagayan de Oro City showcased their respective products during the city's Market Day on Wednesday, February 27, at the City Hall mini park.
The Market Day is part of the City Government's Urban Container Household Gardening Program which was spearheaded by the City Housing Urban Development Department (CHUDD) in coordination with the City Social Welfare and Development Office, Agricultural Productivity Office, and other stakeholders.
The gardening program aims to provide stable food source for impoverished families while saving and preserving the environment.
It's also to combat the rising problem of malnutrition, poverty, and high drop-out rates among school-age children in the city.
Impoverished families in at-risk communities are taught to feed themselves by planting their own vegetables in their own limited space.
The program also encourages residents in the city's relocation sites to plant vegetables in their threshold using recyclable materials.
As such, apart from providing fresh vegetables on the family's table, the homeowners are also contributing in the protection and preservation of the environment.
Aside from the various displays in the booths, some had organized a cooking demo.
Present during the event were City Mayor Oscar Moreno; City Councilors Jay Roa-Pascual, Annie Daba, Enrico Salcedo, Reuben Daba and Alan Lim; CHUDD Head Ermin Stan Pimentel; CHUDD Division Chief Floresa Sabuga-a and UCHG Chairman Joseph Borja.
The Urban Container Household Gardening Project has bagged an international award last November 21, 2018. It won third place in the Food Justice category of the 2016 International Network for Urban Agriculture Awards.
