A 21-YEAR-OLD male from Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City is the newest confirmed case of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the city after he was tested positive on Friday, May 1, for Sars-CoV2, the coronavirus which causes the disease.

The young man, according to Dr. Bernard Rocha, a medical specialist in Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), was admitted in the hospital on April 19 due to a vehicular accident wherein he sustained fractures and acute spinal cord injury.

Rocha said he had undergone surgery for injuries in his spinal cord on April 21. On April 22, the family of the 21-year-old decided to transfer the patient to a private hospital where he was swabbed after acquiring pneumonia.

His test read positive on Friday and he was immediately transferred back to NMMC, wherein he was, at present, intubated with his status as guarded.

Because of this, the NMMC decided to transfer eight patients from the surgical intensive care unit (ICU) to the Emerging Re-emerging Infectious Disease (ERID) ward as precautionary measure, Rocha said.

“Just for precautionary measures kay it turned out that this patient (21-year-old man) tested positive, so the patients there who are at risk because of their co-morbidities in which they are of high-risk population kay they are in the ICU, amo gyud gibalhin kana sya sa among ERID ward for close monitoring and for swabbing,” Rocha said.

There are now four total Covid-19 cases in Cagayan de Oro, with two deaths, one recovery, and another one still admitted.

Meanwhile, a 62-year-old female from outside Cagayan de Oro was also admitted on the same day at the NMMC due to community-acquired pneumonia (high risk).

Rocha said the woman, who has meningioma, was also transferred from a private hospital to NMMC.

She was also intubated with her current status as guarded.
