THE construction of the new Marawi City General Hospital is now set for early completion, with its opening moved from the original target of September to August, as directed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“We are giving the contractors and all of the government agencies the deadline of August, na mabuksan na ang hospital, para makapag-serbisyo na sa taumbayan,” said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during his visit to the city on Monday, June 23, 2025.

The hospital is expected to ease patient volume at Amai Pakpak Medical Center (APMC), the main public hospital in the area, and expand access to basic and emergency medical services for Marawi residents and nearby towns.

Marawi City Health Officer Dr. Ali Dalidig said the new general hospital forms part of the government’s efforts under the Universal Health Care (UHC) program, aiming to enhance the delivery of health services, create more jobs, and promote inclusive development in post-conflict areas.

“Actually, makakadagdag ito sa health services ng Marawi at made-decongest yung Amai Pakpak Medical Center. Malaking tulong sa Marawi City and even sa neighboring towns. More jobs and income,” he said.

(Actually, this will add to the health services in Marawi and help decongest Amai Pakpak Medical Center. It’s a big help for Marawi City and even for neighboring towns. It will also create more jobs and income.)

Dr. Shalimar Sani-Rakiin, APMC chief-of-hospital reinforced this, saying “We expect na yung mga primary cases like ng mga diarrhea at pneumonia, pwede na dito nalang i-cater, for those coming from Marawi City. Yung sa provinces, dun na sa amin. So this is a good development for Marawi City.”

(We expect that primary cases, like diarrhea or pneumonia, can already be handled here for those coming from Marawi City. As for patients from the provinces, they’ll still go to us. So this is a good development for Marawi City.)

During the inspection, Dr. Sulpicio Henry M. Legaspi Jr., regional director of the Department of Health in northern Mindanao, briefed the President on the hospital’s facilities, construction status, and the remaining steps before its full operations begin. (PIA)
