Motorists, behave!

LAST month, the social media went storm after showing three buses were sandwiched together in a highway somewhere in Marikina City. This was just one of the many road incidents happening on daily basis. Thing that could be easily avoided if proper road courtesy is extended by every motorist. Now that we are back to school and back to work, it is highly anticipated that heavy traffic will be experienced in major thoroughfares of Cagayan de Oro.

Driving nowadays in the city will require more patience, understanding, and presence of mind. Proper courtesy with other motorist is absolute and must be observed at all times. Road rage has no room in the minds of our drivers right now.

Here are few sound advice to our motorist in this merry season of giving:

1. Drivers should be mindful when to proceed even if the traffic light is green. Go signal does not mean you can cut through the other lane in order to race against the others. This will only result to further bottleneck along the intersection, thus, chaos on the road begins.

2. Drivers should be patient and learn to stay on their lanes. Swerving and occupying multiple lanes causes danger and annoyance to most motorist.

3. Motorist should learn the basics of using the signals to give the next driver a warning. Whenever you turn left or right, it is imperative that proper signal is given ahead of time or at least 20-30 meters before making a turn.

4. Driving at night presents significant challenge to most drivers. One of which is if other drivers are not mindful with the use of their headlight. City driving does not require high or strong light as most streets are well illuminated by street lamps. Using high beam causes difficulty to other drivers on the opposite lane. And at times, causes temporary blindness.

5. Plan your destination ahead and know your alternate routes. This will not only save time and fuel, but will also mitigate unnecessary stress to you. Knowing where to go and how to get there will position you in the middle of the road without creating inconvenience to others.

It is understood that some of our motorist did not go through the proper channel of securing a license to drive wherein orientation and examinations are given by the authorities. Perhaps this is one of the many waterloo of our local LTO office by no strictly implementing the law. Nonetheless, it is not yet too late to start rethinking our attitude while on the road.

It's time to be more emphatic and be human in driving to avoid traffic. Ajah!
