AT LEAST P97 million will be allocated for Cagayan de Oro City's flood control projects over the next year, 2026.

In an interview Friday, July 25, 2025, 1st District Rep. Lordan Suan said this allocation is part of the P1.594 billion earmarked for the Department of Public Works and Highways Northern Mindanao (DPWH 10) and its 1st District Engineering Office for the year 2025 until 2026.

"These projects are based on lessons from past disasters, particularly Typhoon Sendong (international name Washi), and aim to mitigate flood risks in vulnerable areas," he said.

DPWH 10 1st District Engineer Anna Lee Manzano confirmed that most of the projects for 2025 include flood mitigation. She said the design of the flood mitigation structures takes into account the flood heights recorded during the onslaught of Sendong.

“We considered the flood levels back then and adjusted the design accordingly. But with climate change, anything can happen. So we just hope and pray that the impact won’t be as devastating,” she said.

Aside from flood control, other infrastructure initiatives planned for 2025 include drainage systems, roadway lighting, multipurpose buildings, access roads and asphalt overlays. (PNA)
