A MOTORCYCLE driver died while his passenger was injured after they were caught in cables hanging across the road due to heavy rains at 6:21 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2025, along the national highway in Barangay Balud, San Fernando town.
Declared dead on arrival at the hospital was Sherwin Jan Arrojado Gempisao, 22. The injured passenger was identified as Joanna Angel May Saguisabal Aringoy, 25. Both are residents of Barangay Panadtaran, San Fernando.
Based on the investigation by the San Fernando Police Station and the statement of the passenger, the two were traveling along the national highway toward Cebu City when heavy rain suddenly poured, accompanied by strong winds.
Upon reaching the area, they failed to notice the cables blocking the road, likely brought down by the storm. The cables snagged both riders, causing them to fall off the motorcycle.
As they lay on the road, another vehicle following them failed to notice the accident and ran over Gempisao.
Bystanders immediately called for an ambulance, and the victims were rushed to South General Hospital in Naga City. However, Gempisao was declared dead on arrival due to severe head and body injuries.
The San Fernando Police Station is conducting a follow-up investigation while the motorcycle passenger remains confined at the hospital, possibly for the filing of charges. (AYB)
