25-year-old drowns in Mandaue while trying to save taxi from floodwaters

A 25-YEAR-OLD man drowned in Mandaue City on Friday night, August 15, 2025, after he was swept away by raging floodwaters while trying to stop a taxi from being carried off.

His body was found hours later in Sitio Pagatpatan, Barangay Paknaan, according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Response Office (CDRRMO).

The victim, whose identity has yet to be released, was last seen in Barangay Paknaan 6.5 Zone Ahos, chasing after the taxi, which was later recovered in a mangrove area in Paknaan.

As of early Saturday morning, August 16, at least 317 families, or 1,246 individuals, were taking shelter in evacuation centers across the city.

These included Maguikay National High School (55 families, 179 individuals), Tabok National High School (74 families, 322 individuals), and Umapad Elementary School (188 families, 745 individuals).

No evacuees were reported in Casuntingan, while confirmations from other barangays were still ongoing.

The City Health Office has deployed medical teams to the evacuation sites, while City Social Welfare Services (CSWS) personnel are conducting profiling and providing assistance to evacuees. (CAV)
