THE Cebu City Government launched the 256,000 Trees Project on Friday, July 25, 2025, with an initial planting of 5,000 mangrove propagules at the South Road Properties (SRP).

Nearly 500 volunteers from various organizations, the private sector and City Hall employees participated in the tree-planting activity. Among the organizations present were the Philippine Coast Guard, Junior Chamber International-Cebu Chapter, Philippine Coconut Authority-Cebu Provincial Office, Rotary Club of Mandaue North and Cebu Mt. Manunggal Eagles Club.

Mayor Nestor Archival, who is known for his environmental advocacy, led the activity and planted a mangrove propagule. The project aims to reforest the SRP back channel with mangroves to help mitigate flooding in the area.

Mangrove conservation

The event coincided with the International Day for the Conservation of Mangroves. The City initially expected 150 participants, but the number grew to more than 500, including children and youth.

The administration intends to continue the initiative and reach the target of 256,000 trees planted in both coastal and upland barangays by 2028.

Part of the long-term plan is to address flooding by increasing tree cover, which helps retain water during heavy rains and replenishes water reservoirs.

To help monitor and care for the trees, the City Government encourages volunteers to name trees after their loved ones.

According to the City Government, its aims is to ensure the survival and growth of the trees through active community involvement. / EHP
