FIVE individuals were injured after three motorcycles collided around 5 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2025, along the Transcentral Highway in Sitio Buongon, Barangay Malubog, a mountainous area in Cebu City.
The injured were identified as John Maquisa, 25, a welder from Barangay Buanoy in the town of Balamban, and his passenger, Junill Mahilum, 30, from Nangka, Balamban.
Also injured were Rommel Nocedo from Barangay Bonbon, Cebu City; Wilbert Mabini; and his passenger, Jhon Gonfrey Mabini, 23, from Barangay Babag, Cebu City.
According to the Cebu City Police Office’s Traffic Enforcement Unit investigation, the three motorcycles were traveling in opposite directions.
Maquisa and Nocedo were headed toward Cebu City and were reportedly driving at a slow pace, according to witnesses. Mabini, on the other hand, was heading toward Balamban.
However, Mabini allegedly veered into the opposite lane, causing the collision between the three motorcycles.
Due to the strong impact, all three motorcycles were thrown off the road, and their riders and passengers were injured. A medical team responded quickly, and the victims were brought to the Cebu City Medical Center.
Witnesses said Mabini was speeding, overshot his lane, lost control of his motorcycle, and crashed into the two vehicles heading to Cebu City.
John Maquisa, who spoke to dyHP, said they were riding slowly and keeping a distance because it was still dark, but they did not expect to get into an accident because of what he described as a reckless rider.
“Nag sunod mi’g padagan sir pero distansya mi kay ngit-ngit pa man kay basin mag dumbol mi ba, pero naabtan gyud mi sa na overshoot,” said Maquisa.
(We were riding carefully and maintaining distance because it was dark, but we were hit by the one who overshot the lane.)
They were on their way to Cebu City for a medical appointment required for their work as welders in Barangay Buanoy.
The group claimed the rider who crashed into them appeared to be intoxicated. (AYB)
