FOLLOWING reports of mpox cases, the Lapu-Lapu City Government is set to establish a dedicated task force to address and monitor potential cases within the city.

Outgoing Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan told reporters on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, that he will create a joint task force composed of local agencies to address cases involving residents showing symptoms such as skin rashes, sore throat and muscle pains.

The task force will primarily comprise members of the City Health Office, District Hospital staff, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office.

He added that barangay health workers will take an important role in closely monitoring individuals manifesting the symptoms in interior communities.

Chan also recalled the challenges faced during the Covid-19 pandemic, stating that the situation then was even more severe.

He emphasized that the city was able to overcome the crisis through the collective efforts of the community.

An executive order will be signed by Chan to formalize the creation of the task force.

Symptoms

The City Health Office (CHO) reported one suspected case of mpox involving a 27-year-old male resident who exhibited symptoms such as fever, rashes and muscle pains with no travel history.

SunStar tried to reach out to the CHO on the results of the confirmatory test but has not received information as of press time.

Three residents aged 20-35 years old also showed symptoms similar to the viral infection but the confirmatory test results came out negative.

Chan advised that individuals who manifest symptoms to isolate themselves and immediately contact the city’s dedicated hotlines: 340-8626 and 0955-653-4096.

He added that the city will also shoulder free medication and food supplies to those required to undergo home quarantine due to the infection.

“Cases showing symptoms such as rashes and other signs we advise them to isolate and call our hotline. The team will then be dispatched to their residence to conduct a swab test to determine whether they are positive or not,” Chan said in a mix of Cebuano and English. / DPC
