TRAVELERS planning to fly should act fast as the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) has approved the increase of fuel surcharge for both domestic and international flights to Level 5 for March.

The increase from Level 4 in February prompts carriers to adjust ticket prices accordingly, making advance booking a smart move for budget-conscious passengers.

This is the first time this year that CAB raised the fuel surcharge. Fuel surcharges are additional fees charged by airlines to recover their fuel costs. These are on top of the base fare, which is the actual amount paid by the passenger for his or her seat.

The Level 5 adjustment allows airlines to impose fuel surcharges ranging from P151 to P542 for domestic flights, depending on flight distance, and P498.03 to P3,703.11 for international flights.

Low-cost carrier AirAsia Philippines is encouraging travelers to take advantage of promo fares and secure booking flights as soon as possible to lock in current prices before the surcharge hike takes effect.

“We understand that this change may minimally impact guests’ travel plans. That’s why our Piso Fare promotion is perfectly timed for those looking to save on cost. Despite the adjustments, AirAsia remains fully committed to fulfilling our brand promise of making air travel safe, accessible and hassle-free for purposeful journeys with family, friends and loved ones,” said AirAsia Philippines communications and public affairs head first officer Steve Dailisan, in a statement.

The airline is currently offering Piso Sale tickets with the booking period running from Feb. 15 to 23, while the travel period spans from July 1, 2025, to June 15, 2026.

CAB said airlines wishing to impose or collect fuel surcharge must file their application on or before the effectivity period with a conversion rate of $1 to P58.46. / KOC
