AIRASIA Aviation Group is set to expand its footprint in the Philippines as part of a broader regional strategy to enhance connectivity across the Asean.

The group announced that the country will benefit from over 30 new routes launching in 2025, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening both regional and domestic air travel.

The airline’s expansion plan focuses on optimizing its route network by increasing flight frequencies in high-demand markets, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia. This initiative aims to support growing travel demand in key destinations such as India, China and other Asean nations.

With this growth strategy, AirAsia Philippines confirmed an increase in its Taipei service from 14 to 17 weekly flights starting in July 2025.

“We look forward to supporting AirAsia Aviation Group’s strategy to enhance connectivity for both domestic and international services, focusing on flying the most profitable and popular routes,” said AirAsia Philippines chief executive officer Ricky Isla, in a statement.

“The Philippines offers immense potential, particularly in global tourism, with strong forecast demand. Increasing our Taipei flight frequencies aligns with our forward strategy and the brand promise of democratizing air travel while providing meaningful journeys that inspire travelers to explore their dream destinations.”

These developments come ahead of a planned acquisition that will see AirAsia X Berhad take over AirAsia from Capital A Berhad. The consolidation is expected to create a more robust aviation group by combining both short- and medium-haul operations.

The airline expects to operate a fleet of 234 narrowbody aircraft across its five short-haul airlines in 2025, restoring its full pre-pandemic capacity. Only 16 aircraft remain to be reactivated, while 14 new aircraft deliveries—four from Airbus and 10 from leasing firms—have been confirmed for this year. / KOC
