MANDAUE City has announced that it has now taken steps to enhance public safety and environmental sustainability through a comprehensive tree assessment program.

In a recent meeting at City Hall, officials detailed a plan for a rigorous, science-based evaluation of all trees in the city.

The initiative, strongly endorsed by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), aims to prevent accidents caused by hazardous trees while minimizing unnecessary tree removal.

CDRRMO head Miguel Lumapas said the proposal calls for a team of expert arborists to conduct thorough assessments to determine which trees pose safety risks and require removal or mitigation.

The approach ensures that public safety is prioritized while preserving Mandaue City’s valuable green spaces.

The assessment will also consider various factors, including tree species, age, structural integrity and proximity to public areas.

Risk assessment report

Expert arborists will utilize advanced techniques to evaluate the internal health of trees, identifying potential hazards not visible through external inspection.

The detailed analysis will provide a risk assessment report for each tree, guiding decision-making and ensuring a measured response to potential hazards.

The proposal seeks to determine which trees pose safety risks that could lead to accidents, particularly those near roads and public areas.

The program ensures decisions are based on a tree’s true health, not just its appearance.

“We need the expertise of foresters and arborists to accurately assess the internal condition of these trees. Their knowledge is vital for responsible decision-making.” Lumapas said.

Public forums and online consultations will provide opportunities for residents to express their concerns and contribute to the decision-making process.

On April 1, 2025, a six-year-old boy died after a palm tree fell on him while he was playing in Barangay Ibabao.

Residents already raised concerns about the tree as early as November 2024, warning that it posed a potential hazard.

However, their requests were ignored and the tree eventually fell, claiming the life of the young boy. / Trixcy Shien Cobarde, Benedicto College Intern
