CEBUANO warrior Hyder Amil suffered his first career defeat after a first-round stoppage loss at the hands of Jose Miguel Delgado in the undercard of UFC 317, headlined by Ilia Topuria against Charles Oliveira on Sunday, June 29, 2025 (PH time) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Delgado landed a solid knee to the head of Amil that dropped him to the canvas. The 27-year-old Delgado followed it up with three solid punches that forced the referee to intervene and halt the contest just 26 seconds into the opening round.

The 35-year-old Amil dropped to 11-1, while Delgado improved to 10-1.

Amil began his pro MMA journey in 2017, debuting in the California-based promotion Dragon House. He immediately went to the big leagues after earning a shot in Bellator the following year. After his two-year stint in Bellator, Amil then moved to the Legacy Fighting Alliance, a farm league for the UFC.

In 2023, Amil finally got his biggest break after impressing UFC head Dana White with a unanimous decision over Emrah Sonmez in the Contender Series.

Amil then won three straight fights in the UFC, beating Fernie Garcia, Jeong Yeong Lee, and William Gomis.

Amil was born in Cebu to a Cebuana mother. He migrated to the US when he was just six years old, along with his mother and sisters, to escape from his abusive father.

Topuria claims title

In the main event, Ilia Topuria delivered a thunderous first-round knockout of Charles Oliveira to claim the vacant lightweight title and continue his meteoric rise in the UFC.

Topuria set up the finish with a precise right before unleashing a devastating left hook that floored Oliveira. The bout was waved off at the 2:27 mark of the first round, sending the T-Mobile Arena crowd of 19,800 into a frenzy.

Topuria (17-0) notched his 10th first-round finish and became the first undefeated fighter to win UFC championships in two different weight divisions. He previously held the featherweight belt after defeating Alexander Volkanovski and defending it against Max Holloway.

Oliveira (35-11), the UFC’s all-time leader in finishes, was aiming to reclaim the lightweight title and make history by becoming a two-time champion in the division. / EKA
