Heritage has many definitions and may mean different things to different people, but the heritage we honor in events such as these includes the objects, characteristics, traditions, crafts and teachings that are passed on from one generation to the next.
Four distinguished awardees were chosen for this night after deliberations made by the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (Chac) and subsequent approval by the Cebu City Council.
BUWAK PAPEL (Wax-Coated Paper Flowers)
This traditional art form involves dyeing and coating various forms of paper with wax and is often used to decorate stages during events, altars in churches and carrozas for processions. The process of coating them with wax is primarily for the purpose of longevity and enhanced appearance. They also serve as a cheaper alternative to fresh flowers. This craft can be traced back to World War II, and the Jorolan family accepted the award on behalf of the Buwak Papel community.
USPF Rizaliana Museum
Located on Mabini St., this museum houses the largest collection of Jose Rizal memorabilia outside of Luzon. I remember visiting this place during the first Gabii sa Kabilin run and was astounded by what I found there — clothes (even undershirts) for wintertime and some personal sketches. Also of great importance are photos, letters to his colleagues and friends, and 14 original postcards with the text of Mi Último Adiós. An original KKK flag is another treasure to seek out. This collection was obtained through family connections with our national hero.
Agustin & Beatriz Jereza Ancestral Mansion
This former Jereza family home, built in the 1900s, has been faithfully restored over the years, maintaining its pre-war art deco interiors, with halls lined with old photographs that pull you back to the glory days of this elegant mansion. Director Glen Albutra of USPF received the award on behalf of these two interconnected honorees, and USPF president Paulino Yabao, a laywer, delivered the response on behalf of all the heritage awardees for the evening.
R & M Preserves
For 55 years now, what started as a hobby of Rosario Siao — her way of giving “gifts of love” — gave birth to what is now the pioneer brand of dried mangoes in the Philippines. This multi-awarded, family-owned company is proud to carry Cebu’s myriad of flavors in each slice of their product. In 2013, the Choco Mangga line of products was developed and turned out to be a great success.
