The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Central Visayas (BFAR 7) is preparing the turnover of its multi-species marine hatchery located in the town of Bantayan to the local government unit (LGU).

BFAR 7 Regional Director Mario Ruinata met with incoming Bantayan Mayor Orlando Layese on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, to finalize the transfer of the legislated hatchery to the Bantayan LGU, which will now take over its operations starting January 1, 2026.

Despite the turnover, BFAR 7 will continue to provide technical support and conduct regular monitoring to ensure the hatchery’s sustainability.

BFAR’s collaboration with the LGU also includes plans to develop 500 hectares for seaweed farming, implement milkfish (bangus) production using fish cage technology, and promote fisheries-based eco-tourism.

Strengthening the enforcement of fisheries laws was also discussed during the meeting.

BFAR 7 said these continued initiatives are expected to enhance the livelihood of local fisherfolk and support the long-term growth of the aquaculture sector on the island.

BFAR 7 formally inaugurated the Bantayan Island Multi-Species Marine Hatchery in Barangay Bantigue was formally inaugurated on January 16, 2023.

The ceremony was led by DA Undersecretary for Fisheries Drusila Esther Bayate and attended by key officials from BFAR, the Department of Agriculture, and local government units, including Bantayan Mayor Arthur Despi and Madridejos Mayor Romeo Villaceran.

The hatchery, established through Republic Act 10856 enacted in 2016, aims to address fry scarcity, reduce dependency on imports, and promote species diversification.

The project targets an initial production of 500,000 fry and focuses on cultivating pompano and other high-value species to strengthen local aquaculture. / CDF
