OVER 70 fisherfolk from across Central Visayas were recognized this week not only for their daily contributions to food security but also for their entrepreneurial skills and cultural talents, as the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 7 concluded its month-long celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolk Month.
Held at the BFAR 7 office in Cebu City on Thursday, May 29, 2025, and Friday, May 30, the culminating event featured regional contests in poetry (balak), quiz bee, poster-making, singing, cooking and net mending — a platform to showcase the creativity and skill of fisherfolk beyond the sea.
Participants were top winners from provincial competitions in Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor.
Public information officer Jose Arro said the celebration goes beyond tradition — it’s about empowerment and visibility.
“This event gives our fisherfolk the opportunity to show they’re not only food providers, but also knowledge bearers and artists. It’s a moment of pride and recognition,” he said in a text message on Friday.
At the same venue, a Kadiwa ng Pangulo market fair was held, featuring fresh and processed products directly from farmers, fisherfolk and BFAR-assisted 21 micro, small and medium enterprises.
Among the items sold were fresh tilapia, bangus, shrimp, scallops, dried fish, asin tibuok (artisanal sea salt), banana chips, bottled ginamos, moringa products, and more — all offered at farmgate prices.
The initiative not only increased income for small producers but also created direct connections between them and consumers.
“This celebration is part of our continuing effort to elevate the fisheries sector and support small-scale entrepreneurs. By connecting them directly to buyers, we are helping improve household incomes and promote access to affordable, locally sourced food,” Arro added.
Arro also relayed a message from BFAR 7 Director Dr. Allan Poquita, who paid tribute to the region’s fisherfolk and farmers.
“Today, as we end the month-long celebration, we also renew our promise: to stand with you, to support you and to uplift your livelihoods through sustainable, inclusive and empowering programs,” Poquita said. / CDF
