THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Central Visayas (BFAR 7) distributed 315 kilograms of “Guso” (seaweed) in Lapu-Lapu City and Camiguin on June 25-26, 2025, aligned with its commitment to strengthening the seaweed industry.
In a post on Facebook on Monday, June 30, 2025, BFAR Central Visayas said they distributed 315 kilograms of Eucheuma denticulatum and Kappaphycus striatus.
Both types of seaweed are red algae, primarily cultivated for their vital role in environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation.
Lapu-Lapu City fisherfolk were the beneficiaries of the 300 kilograms of seaweed -- 220 kilograms were Eucheuma denticulatum and 80 kilograms of Kappaphycus striatus.
The distribution aims to elevate the seaweed cultivation and provide a sustainable income-generating livelihood for coastal communities.
Also, 15 kilograms of Kappaphycus striatus were handed over to the Seaweed Culture Laboratory of BFAR Northern Mindanao in Camiguin. This support was intended to boost the seaweed research and culture development in the region.
The BFAR 7’s initiative underscores its enduring commitment for seaweed aquaculture through inter-regional cooperation. (Divine Grace Bendanillo, CNU intern)
