POPE Leo XIV appointed on July 16, 2025, Bishop Alberto Sy Uy, 58, as the new archbishop of Cebu.
He succeeded Archbishop Jose Palma, who resigned upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.
Uy, born October 18, 1966, in Ubay, Bohol, becomes the fifth Archbishop of Cebu.
He has served as bishop of Tagbilaran since his appointment in 2016, and his consecration and installation in January 2017.
Uy began his seminary formation at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran City.
He later pursued theology studies at St. John Mary Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro City.
The Diocese of Talibon in Bohol ordained him a priest on April 14, 1993.
He holds a licentiate in Sacred Theology from Loyola School of Theology and a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, which he completed from 2002 to 2006.
The appointment came through the Vatican’s Daily Bulletin, following the acceptance of Palma's resignation.
Palma, who turned 75 on March 19, had led the Archdiocese of Cebu for over a decade.
A formal installation date for Uy in Cebu is pending.
The Archdiocese of Cebu serves over 4.7 million Catholics across more than 170 parishes. (DPC)
