IT, BPM pushed as long-term careers

JOBS in the Information Technology (IT) and Business Process Management (BPM) industries are being pushed as long-term career opportunities for Filipinos.

The Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) is set to roll out this new rebranding campaign in September 2023 during the annual IBPAP Summit.

“It is high time for our industry to strengthen its reputation as a long-term career profession. Many, our families even, still perceived our industry as not a long-term career option.

We deserve to have a better perception, especially for those of us working in the industry for a long time,” said Jack Madrid, chief executive officer and president of IBPAP.

Madrid said the attrition rate in the country’s IT-BPM industry is between 30 to 40 percent, citing a survey among its members that shows 40 percent of employees are looking to change jobs in the next four to six months.

Artificial intelligence

At present, IBAP is currently addressing the concern of talent supply amid the rising adoption of AI in companies.

IBPAP forged a partnership with StackTrek, a global provider of AI and programming training solutions to address IT talent development in the country.

The initiative, through the National IT Talent Development, aims to enable Filipino talent and open them up to opportunities in the IT-BPM sector.

A million jobs

The program is aligned with the vision of the Philippine IT-BPM Industry Roadmap 2028 to create 1.1 million new jobs by 2028.

In a joint statement, the IBPAP and StackTreck said they will focus on embedding training for industry-relevant skills into the curriculum and internship programs of Higher Education Institutions and launching IT career initiatives across the Philippines.

It has the following three components—AI and Programming Academy which delivers comprehensive training solutions in programming and AI, enabling companies to prepare for an AI-powered future; StackLab, which specializes in establishing AI Research and Development units and delivering AI software applications to clients; and AI Executive Education Program, that features intensive learning and consulting sessions led by expert trainers.

Bill Yuen, chief executive officer at StackTrek, believes that with the combined expertise, resources and vision, they can empower individuals and organizations to embrace AI, redefine business landscapes, and drive the industry forward.

Madrid, on the other hand, said proactive collaboration is crucial to empower Filipino talent so they could flourish in roles that involve higher-value work in this AI-driven economy.

A study conducted by Gartner estimates that by 2026, the call center industry could save up to US$80 billion by replacing humans with AI chatbots.

The Department of Trade and Industry believes that investing in AI could contribute $92 billion to the Philippine economy by 2030.

The agency said an AI roadmap has been developed and one of its recommendations to upskill Filipino talent is the creation of the National Center for AI Research.
