THE Cebu Provincial Board has passed an ordinance setting speed limits for all motorized vehicles on the tourist islands of Bantayan and Camotes.

Cebu Sixth District Provincial Board Member Glenn Anthony Soco authored the ordinance and endorsed it to the Sanggunian Panlungsod on Monday, April 28, 2025, along with an attached Certificate of Urgency.

Prior to its approval, the ordinance underwent first, second, and third readings, all within Monday’s provincial board session.

Under the ordinance, the speed limit for all motor vehicles traversing provincial roads and streets in the towns of Santa Fe, Madridejos, Bantayan, Poro, Pilar, Tudela, and San Francisco, has been set at 30 kilometers per hour (kph).

For open roads or national roads, the speed limit was set at 60 kph for light vehicles and motorcycles, and 50 kph for trucks, buses, and tricycles.

For “through streets” or roads where traffic generally has the right-of-way over vehicles entering or crossing at intersections, the speed limit was set at 50 kph for light vehicles and motorcycles; and 40 kph for trucks, buses, and tricycles.

For roads classified as crowded streets, the speed limit was set at 20 kph for light vehicles, motorcycles, trucks, buses, and tricycles. Fines and penalties were also set for violators of the ordinance.

Soco said the ordinance takes into consideration the safety of tourists who often use local transport to travel within these islands. Citing studies, Soco said speed limits result in fewer accidents. / EHP
