CEBU will experience a week of cloudy skies and passing thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon, or habagat, the state weather bureau said.
Heavy rains and flooding hit Central Cebu on Friday night, Aug. 15, 2025, due to intensified monsoon activity.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Administration Services (Pagasa) weather specialist Mark Gales told SunStar Cebu in a phone interview that partly cloudy to cloudy skies with sudden overcast conditions and passing thunderstorms are expected throughout the week.
Although weather conditions may improve starting Saturday, Aug. 16, Gales warned that intermittent rain showers and flooding could still occur, some lasting for extended periods.
He advised residents near creeks and flood-prone areas to move vehicles away from waterways and evacuate if necessary.
“If you live near a creek or in flash flood-prone areas, please evacuate if possible. If water levels rise and it’s still safe to do so, evacuate immediately,” Gales said in Cebuano.
“Move vehicles or motorcycles away from the creek during the heavy downpour, as water levels may rise quickly, especially if it’s also raining in the mountains, which adds to the flow,” he added.
No significant increase in wind strength is expected over coastal waters, keeping conditions generally favorable for sea travel this week.
However, thunderstorms may bring sudden strong winds or gusts, which can temporarily cause wave heights to increase.
As of Saturday, a low-pressure area was detected over the West Philippine Sea, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. / DPC
