Cebu stages the magic of ‘Almost, Maine’ this July

Prepare to be swept off your feet. “Almost, Maine” — the play that stole the hearts of theatergoers around the world — is landing in Cebu, and it’s bringing the Northern Lights with it.

On Saturday, July 26, 2025 the UP Cebu Performing Arts Hall will transform into a dreamy New England town, where love is anything but ordinary. Presented by Cebu’s own Little Boy Productions, Almost, Maine is a series of nine poignant, whimsical and laugh-out-loud vignettes about love found, lost, and somewhere in between — all unfolding beneath the celestial shimmer of the Aurora Borealis.

Since its quiet NYC debut in 2006, “Almost, Maine” has become one of the most performed plays on the planet. It’s beloved not just for its sharp writing and magical realism, but for its unflinching take on what it means to connect, to risk and to feel.

But this isn’t your average restaging. Little Boy Productions — known for bold theatrical choices like the Asian premieres of Disney’s “High School Musical” and “The Last Five Years” — is putting a uniquely Cebuano spin on things. Their “Almost, Maine” is brought to life by an all-local cast that reads like a who’s who of Cebu’s creative scene: Nyegs Abayon, Yalena Ysabel Achacoso, Athena Bautista, Rhea Fantonial Bautista, Jay Chan II, Claire Codilla, Jolu Escano, Maxim Ilagan, Nelson Judaya, Chloe Palang, Robert Brendan Palomo, Thomas Pua, Jean Mari Saraña, John Sitchon and Jaienne Braveree Suralta — a dazzling mix of veteran performers, indie artists, educators, creators and rising stars.
