AS THE heat of summer bears down on Cebu, residents are employing low-cost and sustainable solutions to keep themselves cool. With records set to be broken and daily heat waves suggesting an annual increase, Cebuanos are finding ways to beat the heat without relying on air conditioning.
From families and street vendors to students and senior citizens, everyone is feeling the intense midday heat. But across the city and its neighboring provinces, in markets and classrooms, they are coping with the heat using simple, affordable, creative and innovative methods.
“Walay aircon, walay reklamo. Basta naay tubig bugnaw, okay na,” (“No aircon, no complaints. As long as there’s cold water, we’re good.”), said one street vendor in downtown Cebu, who had a large umbrella shielding him and a wet towel wrapped around his neck.
Students in schools bring mini rechargeable fans and insulated water bottles to help regulate body temperature. “I drink a lot of water for hydration, comfort, and to keep cool,” said 17-year-old Yzzabelle, a high school senior from Barangay
Labangon.
Many families open their windows early in the morning to allow cool air to enter, then close them by noon to keep the cooler air sealed inside. Others avoid cooking in the afternoon and sleep on a mat placed directly on the floor at night to stay cool.
Barangay health officers have also been reminding residents to drink water and avoid being outdoors during peak hours. Some households have begun to use solar-powered or self-made fans as replacements for
air conditioning.
Despite the heat, the Cebuano spirit prevails. With equal parts traditional knowledge and modern ingenuity, people are finding practical ways to stay safe and comfortable under the merciless summer sun.
