FOUR of Cebu’s prime movers were recently conferred awards during the 2025 ProgreCebu Awards, a joint initiative by the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and Cebu’s oldest-running newspaper, The Freeman.
Held at the NuStar Resort and Casino on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the awards night brought together Cebu’s leading business figures, public officials, and community leaders to celebrate transformative contributions across sectors critical to the province’s development.
“The name itself, ProgreCebu, beautifully captures the essence of what this initiative stands for — a celebration of progress in Cebu,” said MCCI president Mark Ynoc during the awards night. “What began as a concept has now become a prestigious platform to honor excellence, innovation, and the spirit of nation-building.”
Ynoc highlighted fairness and credibility as core principles of the nomination and selection process.
“This collaboration is founded on a deep commitment to the development of our beloved province,” he said. “ What was once just an idea is now running in its second year and will be institutionalized as an annual celebration, one that honors and recognizes those who shape Cebu’s story of progress.”
Atty. Augusto “Gus” Go, founder and chairman of the AWG Group of Companies, was named Most Distinguished Individual for his decades-long impact in education and entrepreneurship.
Cebu Safari and Adventure Park in Carmen was awarded Most Distinguished Destination for positioning northern Cebu as an eco-tourism hub and drawing thousands of tourists annually.
The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority earned the title of Most Distinguished Institution for its continued infrastructure enhancements and aviation performance, anchoring Cebu’s role as a gateway to the Visayas and Mindanao.
The Visayan Electric Company, Inc., one of the country’s oldest energy providers, received the ProgreCebu Excellence Award for sustained investments in reliable power systems that support Cebu’s expanding urban footprint.
PhilStar Media Group president and chief executive officer Miguel Belmonte underscored the broader vision behind the awards.
“Cebu is no longer just a leisure destination — it is an investment magnet, an innovation hub, and a model of provincial urbanization,” Belmonte said. “This partnership with MCCI goes beyond recognition. It is a commitment to support and amplify the voices building Cebu’s future.” / KOC
