To mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines, a celebration of stories and cinematic craftsmanship takes center stage at the Chinese Film Festival, currently running at AyalaMalls Central Bloc, Cebu IT Park from June 12 to 21, 2025.
Organized by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Cebu, together with the China Film Art Research Center, China Film Administration, China Film Archive, the Federation of Chinese Associations in Cebu and Chinatown TV, the 10-day festival brings to local audiences four celebrated modern Chinese films such as “Pegasus 2,” “Successor,” “Viva La Vida” and “Evacuate from the 21st Century.” These films, spanning comedy-drama, romance and science fiction, were critically acclaimed in China and are now made accessible for free to the Cebuano public.
Local leaders reflect on Chinese cinema
During the launch, notable guests including Cebu City Vice Mayor Dondon Hontiveros, councilors Edgardo “Jaypee” Labella II and Joy Pesquera graced the event.
Hontiveros shared, “Let this festival spark curiosity, foster friendships and deepen the bond between our communities.”
Councilor Labella recalled how Chinese cinema shaped his childhood — from “Karate Kid” with Jackie Chan to “Hero” with Jet Li and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” with Michelle Yeoh. “Chinese movies have always been a big part of my life. I learned values in life just by merely watching them,” he said.
Strengthening cultural bonds
People’s Republic of China Consul General Zhang Zhen emphasized the shared roots between China and the Philippines. “We are geographically close, yet culturally closer. There are millions of Filipinos and Chinese who share ancestral ties. We are united in spirit through traditions, values and a common desire for peace and prosperity. This film festival is more than a showcase of cinema — it is a testament to our friendship.”
Screenings continue throughout the week, offering viewers a chance to engage with contemporary Chinese storytelling. For the final stretch, “Viva La Vida” returns on June 18, “Evacuate from the 21st Century” on June 19, “Pegasus 2” on June 20 and “Successor” closes the festival on June 21. Admission is free. All screenings are held at 7 p.m.
