A POLICE officer was killed and a traffic officer was injured after being struck by a private vehicle on M. Cuenco Avenue corner J. Panis Street, Barangay Kasambagan, Cebu City at 4:38 a.m. Sunday, December 1, 2024.

The fatality was identified as Carlo Tachado Bayato, 28, a member of the Philippine National Police and a resident of Barangay Cubacub, Mandaue City.

Investigation by the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) revealed that while traffic officer Cesar Silva, 31, of the Road Management Authority, was on duty, he was suddenly hit by Bayato, who was riding his motorcycle, causing both of them to fall.

While still on the concrete road, a sub-compact sports utility vehicle driven by 22-year-old Luziane Marron Uy Ty, a resident of Barangay Talamban, Cebu City, made a left turn from IT Park heading to Talamban.

Ty failed to notice the two individuals on the road, colliding with the fallen motorcycle and running over Bayato’s body.

A medical team quickly arrived to assist the officers and transported them to Cebu City Medical Center, but Bayato was declared dead on arrival due to the injuries he sustained.

Ty is currently in custody of the Traffic Enforcement Unit of CCPO and will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injury and damage to property. (AYB)
