THE Lapu-Lapu City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) has distributed assistive devices to persons with disabilities (PWDs) in five barangays as part of its annual support program.
Ramon Berdon, CSWDO’s Gender and Development focal person, said in an interview with SunStar Cebu on Monday, June 16, 2025, that the latest distribution covered Barangays Agus, Bankal, Buaya, Calawisan and Poblacion.
Seven wheelchairs and one walking crutch were distributed to the qualified beneficiaries on Saturday, June 7.
“We do it every year,” Berdon said. “Assistive devices really help people with disabilities work easier, move easier and participate in activities.”
From December 2024 to June 2025, the CSWDO has distributed one white cane, four hearing aids, five single canes and 21 wheelchairs, with a total budget of P1.5 million.
However, Berdon said the distribution of hearing aids has been temporarily suspended due to concerns that the devices may not adequately meet the specific needs of some individuals with hearing impairments.
PWDs can avail themselves of assistive devices by submitting a request letter and a photo showing the needed equipment. Berdon said the CSWDO team conducts home visits to verify and assess each request.
The CSWDO aims to promote inclusivity and accessibility for PWDs in Lapu-Lapu City and remains committed to supporting and promoting their welfare in the community. / Yvon Maratas, Benedicto College intern
