SO THAT athletes and personnel involved in the 2025 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet remain safe, outdoor events will not be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, when the heat index felt by the human body peaks.

“The Region decided to implement the no game between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to make sure athletes and all personnel are safe. (For) Only those events played outdoors,” Department of Education (DepEd) 7 Director Salustiano Jimenez said on Tuesday, March 11.

Jimenez said athletes, teachers and coaches can rest during those hours.

In a text message to SunStar Cebu, Jimenez said more than 17,000 registered as participants of the 2025 Cviraa.

Of the number, around 7,000 are chaperones and members of the working committee.

The 2025 Cviraa runs from March 11 to 16 in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental.

Isolated rain

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) expects isolated thunderstorms and rain showers this week in Cebu and the rest of Central Visayas, even as these areas remain under a “caution” heat index category.

Pagasa Visayas weather specialist Manny John Agbay said on Sunday, March 9, that surface air temperatures will range from 26 to 31 degrees Celsius, with the heat index possibly reaching 35 to 38 degrees Celsius.

Under Pagasa’s heat index classification, the “caution” category means the human body may feel temperatures between 27 to 31 degrees Celsius, with actual air temperatures ranging from 30 to 37 degrees Celsius.

While there is no Pagasa monitoring station in Bayawan City, its neighboring Dumaguete City recorded a surface air temperature of 30.6 degree Celsius and a heat index of 35.8 degree Celsius at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11. / CDF
