THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) vowed a thorough investigation into alleged fund misuse in government projects, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive in his recent State of the Nation Address (Sona).
“Ibibigay ko ‘to sa investigation side sa’min, sa mga nangyayari sa mga katiwalian na sinabi ng Presidente. Gagawin namin ‘yan (I will refer this to our investigation team, regarding the irregularities mentioned by the President. We will act on it),” Jonvic Remulla, DILG secretary, stated in a PTV interview Monday afternoon, July 28, 2025.
President Marcos, during his Sona on Monday, ordered a comprehensive audit of all flood control projects.
Ineffective infrastructure
He criticized costly and ineffective infrastructure that failed during recent floods in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
“Mahiya naman kayo sa inyong kapwa Pilipino! (Have some shame before your fellow Filipinos!)” Marcos declared, addressing those involved in “stealing” public funds and “racketeering” in government projects.
Remulla commended Marcos’ stern warning, calling the President’s address to Congress “a great fantastic speech.” “I’m glad kasi gusto ko yung accountable talaga ang gobyerno sa tao (because I believe the government should be fully accountable to the public). And this is the most conclusive I’ve heard him speak about having people accountable. And those of the people in front of him, mahiya naman kayo (you should be ashamed),” Remulla emphasized.
Enhanced peace, security
In line with improving peace and security, Remulla highlighted the strengthened Emergency 911 system.
“We are on our way, the five-minute response time, the 911 system is about to be put up, new firetrucks, more policemen, more CCTVs – we’re gonna make the country safer, cities safer, everyone will be safer,” the interior secretary noted.
Remulla reassured the public that existing emergency hotlines established by local government units can still function as dispatch centers if needed.
To bolster police response, the DILG chief committed to providing additional vehicles and motorcycles for the Philippine National Police as part of the new 911 emergency call system rollout.
This upgraded system is part of the administration’s broader initiative for faster police response, complying with Marcos’ directive for improved police visibility and public safety. / PNA
