ANOTHER Filipino boxing legend is making his way back to the ring after a long layoff.
Following the announcement of hall-of-famer Manny Pacquiao’s comeback from retirement, four-division world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. is also set to return after a two-year hiatus.
He will take on Chilean contender Andres Campos for the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight belt on June 14, 2025 (US time), at the Casino Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Donaire Jr. is now 42 and last fought on July 29, 2023, in a World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight title fight against Alexandro Santiago in Las Vegas, where he was outclassed and lost by unanimous decision.
Despite stepping away from competition, Donaire Jr. never officially announced his retirement from and has maintained his No. 5 ranking in the WBA.
Donaire Jr. made history as the oldest boxer to win a bantamweight world title at 38 years old when he defeated Nordone Oubaali for the WBC belt in 2021.
Campos, 28, will have youth on his side as he is 14 years younger than Donaire Jr.
The Chilean fighter has fought for a world title once. He challenged Sunny Edwards for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight strap but lost by lopsided unanimous decision in England.
Campos is coming off a third-round stoppage win over Jimson Garcia in Chile last April 12, 2025.
Campos is currently ranked No. 8 by the WBA.
Donaire Jr. is 42-8 with 28 knockouts, while Campos is 17-2-1 with six knockouts. / EKA
