A DRUG personality was injured after engaging in a shootout with operatives of the Station Drug Enforcement Unit of the Mabolo Police Station during a buy-bust in Sitio Rio 1, Barangay Apas, Cebu City, around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
The suspect, identified as Harry Mistula Candaza, 40, a resident of the area, was wounded after he allegedly fired at the police upon realizing that he was transacting with an undercover officer.
Three of Candaza’s companions were also arrested during the operation. They were identified as Retchel Ladera Solon, 40; her younger brother Paulo James, 28; and Vincent Retura Buar, 30, all residents of Sitio Rio 1, Barangay Apas.
Police recovered 27 sachets of a substance believed to be shabu and a caliber .45 pistol loaded with four live bullets from the suspects.
According to the Mabolo Police Station, they received reports about Candaza’s involvement in the illegal drug trade in the area.
Following a period of surveillance and validation, authorities launched a buy-bust.
During the transaction, Candaza reportedly sensed that he was dealing with a police officer. He then drew his caliber .45 firearm and opened fire at the operatives.
After the incident, no police personnel were harmed. The operatives retaliated, shooting Candaza and hitting him in the body. He was immediately brought to the Cebu City Medical Center for treatment.
His three companions were handcuffed and brought to the Mabolo Police Station’s temporary custodial facility.
The four suspects will face charges for violating Sections 5 and 11, Article II of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. Candaza will also face charges for violating Republic Act 10591 or the Illegal Possession of Firearms and Ammunition. (AYB)
